BBQ and Outdoor Fire Safety Tips for Canton, Ohio Homeowners
7/12/2022 (Permalink)
Regular maintenance and following a few grilling tips can help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), July is the peak month for grilling fires, followed by June, May, and August. Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis, or barbeques. With the summer season in full swing fire its important for homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment, like grills and propane tanks. Doing regular maintenance and following a few grilling tips can help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.
Follow These Grilling Safety Tips:
- Only use your grill outside.
- Keep it at least 3 feet from siding, deck rails, and eaves.
- Keep a 3-foot zone around your grill to protect kids and pets.
- Never leave fires unattended, including grills, fire pits, and patio torches.
- Clean your girl after each use. This will remove grease that can start a fire.
Additional tips to consider:
- Keep a fire extinguisher close. Keep a fire extinguisher within arm’s reach of the grill so you have something to put out an accidental fire. It doesn’t take long for a fire to catch and spread. Educate yourself on how to use the extinguisher beforehand.
- Do NOT decorate your grill or the area around it. Decorating for a family picnic or gathering is a terrific way to get into the spirit of the party, but don’t include your grill or fire pit as part of the decoration area. Flags, umbrellas, hanging decorations and baskets, and other flammable items can just become quick fuel for an out-of-control fire.
- Keep your grill maintained. Regular cleanings after each use are key, but the maintenance doesn’t stop there. At least one to every three months (depending on usage), you should clean your grease management system (grease trap), grates, bars, and other grilling components to reduce the chance of flare-ups and the growth of bacteria which could make you sick.
Be safe, and stay aware while around a fire. Being prepared and having a plan is always better than the alternative.

Mold Growth in Homes in Canton, Ohio From Water Damage.
6/2/2022 (Permalink)
Mold growth on your walls in Canton, Ohio? Call the SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County team to help remediate mold.
After an area flood or pipe-break that causes a water disaster in your Canton, Ohio home a common issue is mold growth. The reason mold begins to form on walls is due to the high humidity and condensation. If you notice mold growth here are eight tips for removing it.
Tips for cleaning up mold:
- Protect yourself: Put on personal protective equipment like gloves masks and goggles to protect your eyes, nose, mouth, and skin.
- Toss: Take it out! Anything that was wet with flood water cannot be cleaned and dried completely within 24 to 48 hours should be taken outside. Take photos of discarded items for failing insurance claims.
- Dry it up: Try your home and everything in it as quickly as possible. Within 24 to 48 hours if you can.
- Air it out: When cleaning up your mold open doors and windows.
- Circulate: After the mold cleanup use dehumidifiers to remove any moisture from the air. Do not use fans until the mold has been removed. You don’t want to circulate the mold spores in the air.
- Do not mix cleaners: Do not mix cleaning products together because it could create toxic vapors especially mixing bleach and ammonia together.
- Scrub services: Clean with water any detergent. Remove all mold you can see. Dry right away.
- Do not cover it, remove it: Painting or caulking over mold will not prevent mold from growing. It is important to fix water problem and dry out and remediate the area completely before you paint or caulk.
The Mold Remediation Process
Every mold damage scenario is different, and if the extent of your damage is overwhelming than calling a mold remediation company is the best solution. All mold removal requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate the SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County process:

Holiday Safety Tips from your Friends at SERVPRO!

Holiday safety tips from your friends at SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County
Christmas is right around the corner!
It is fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls the season, be fire smart. To avoid issues such as a tree fire, house fire, outlet overload, and even electrocution, follow the tips below to keep you and your family safe and happy during this 2021 holiday season!
- Water your tree daily! A dry tree can quickly transform into a tree in flames.
- Do not connect more than three strings of lights.
- Keep all electrical cords away from hear sources. Do not nail or staple them either. Placing them under a rug is not a safe idea. Neither is completely shutting a door or closing a window with a cord running through it. This is a fire hazard.
- Avoid over plugging appliances into an outlet, it can overload it.
- Before plugging in appliances, lights, and yard decorations, make sure your sockets are in good condition and that wires are not bare. Oftentimes, we use these decorations or outlets just once a year, so it is important to carefully inspect them.
- Turn off and unplug any lights before going to sleep or leaving your home. Extinguish any candles before leaving.
- Stay in the kitchen when cooking or baking. Never leave food cooking unattended.
- Use battery-operated candles instead of candles with actual flames.
- Water and electricity never mix well. Be careful your string lights are not touching or partially in the tree’s water bowl.
- Space heaters should be placed at least three feet away from furniture, or flammable materials especially your Christmas tree.
The staff and crews at SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please be safe throughout the holiday season. Tips to prevent burns. SERVPRO is always here to help at 330-497-4600 if you experience a fire, water or storm damage.
Summer is the time to enjoy vacations, camping, picnics and family gatherings; however, summertime also brings fires and burn injuries due to fireworks and outdoor cooking. Know how to prevent a burn while you enjoy outdoor activity this summer.
- Wear short sleeves or roll them up when cooking on the grill.
- Use long-handled barbecue tools.
- Keep a 3-foot safe zone around grills, fire pits and campfires.
- Attend public fireworks displays; this leaves the lighting to the professionals.
If you experience a burn, do the following:
- Place the burn in cool or lukewarm water for three to five minutes.
- Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth.
- See your doctor if the burn is larger than your palm.
- Use compresses if running water isn't available.
- Don't apply ice. It can lower body temperature and cause further pain and damage.

Make Your Plan Today.” During this time of Covid-19 it is even more necessary to take extra time with your family and co-workers to make sure everyone is prepared in case of a disaster.
4 Steps to Becoming Prepared According to Ready.gov.

If there is an emergency disaster at home or at your business preparing and practicing for an evacuation is critical.

Consider each member of the family and pets when putting together your emergency kit. Important items are flashlights, water, first aid kit, batteries, food, and overnight essentials. If you already have a kit together updating your supplies based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control.

SERVPRO is Here to Help Disinfect Against the Coronavirus
6/4/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO crews are here to help disinfect your building with a proactive cleaning against the Coronavirus in Canton, Ohio.
During this unprecedented time caused by the global pandemic of coronavirus, this is a reminder to our customers that we are specialists in cleaning services, and we adhere to the highest cleaning and sanitation standards. We are prepared to clean and disinfect your home or business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
What is Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned?
Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned means professionally trained SERVPRO crews perform requested cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection services to the properties. Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned program ranges from standard to enhanced services and are intended to limit the survival and spread of emerging viral pathogens.
Standard services focus on cleaning and disinfectant application to frequently contacted touchpoints such as:
- Doorknobs
- Light switches
- Countertops
- Keyboards
- Desks
Enhanced services build upon standard services by adding cleaning and disinfectant application to less frequently contacted touchpoints such as the front, sides, and backs of desks, counters, tables, vanities, or equipment. We will work with our customers to identify specific surfaces for cleaning and disinfectant application.
The cleaning will remove dirt and impurities, including germs, from surfaces and applying a liquid disinfectant will aid in killing germs on surfaces. Please keep in mind that porous surfaces, such as carpets, cannot be truly disinfected; but they can be sanitized, which reduces but does not necessarily eliminate all the contaminants on a treated surface.
Specialized Products
The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Spring is coming and water damage is coming with it. As winter thaws away the melted snow can be detrimental to your home. In order to prevent water damage in your home this season take these precautions in order to stop or notice water damage before it causes harm to your family and home.
- Basement pumps - Install a sump pump or sewage back flow valve and keep a battery-operated backup in case of power failure.
- Debris Removal - Clean gutters at least twice a year to prevent ice dams and debris blockage.
- Exterior of house - Inspect windows and doors for cracks around the edges. Keep all walls and side paneling painted and well sealed.
- Foundation cracks - Inspect your foundation on a regular basis for cracks that can be small, but can create a lot of damage.
- Monitor your water bill - A simple way of detecting a non obvious leak is by watching for a non accounted for spike in your water bill.
- Grading & Landscaping - Make sure your grading encourages water flow away from your house. If it does not think about altering it. While also trimming trees and avoid planting shrubs near pipes and other utilities.
- Roof - Ensure that your roof is maintained properly. Check for sufficient insulation and that your ceiling is airtight.
- Disconnect hoses - Standing water in a hose can cause freezing and lead to a ice blockage in the pipes. This can cause damage to walls, floors, and foundation.
- Water Main - If you leave for an extended amount of time shut off your water main to decrease your chances of standing water and frozen pipes.
- Water Detection Devices - Invest in water detector which is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor is in contact with moisture.
No one can prevent water damage in all means, but taking action on preventing the damage can prevent common causes of damage and save you from costly cleanups if the damage was to strike on your household. If water damage does reach your home contact SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County at 330-497-4600.

From the first phone call with Tracy, this company completely took care of me. Tracy was empathetic, which is exactly what you need in a situation like this. My primary contact was Joe, and he absolutely went above and beyond for me. This was a rental property, and I live in a different state, and Joe kept me updated on everything going on and was in constant contact with my insurance company. A situation that was absolutely overwhelming in the beginning was handled in both an expedited and professional manner. I would recommend them to anyone.”
"Had a flood at my place, and wow! These guys made everything easy as can be! This was my first experience with a flood, and they were so helpful. So informative. And so, comforting about how everything was going to go! Hopefully this never happens again, but if it does, I know who I’m calling!"

Hoarding Posses Real Problems to Your Home in Massillion, Ohio
3/5/2019 (Permalink)
A fire damaged a home and all its belongings in Massillion, Ohio.
Hoarding is a disorder that leads to an excessive accumulation of items in a home because the homeowner can not part with their items. The excessive accumulation is not only unhealthy for the individuals who live in the home, but is also unhealthy for the home. The abundance of ‘stuff’ can lead to physical injuries, fires, structural damage, and a toxic environment for the hoarder their family and their pets. It is important to know the effects of hoarding so you can stop or help someone stop before it is too late.
An individual living in clutter is susceptible to many physical injures. The obvious being increasing risk of falling and being hurt from the clutter collapsing. Although, there are many other ways an individual can face physical harm that can go unnoticed among the disorder of the home. As the clutter accumulates the house becomes dust ridden and the air quality increasingly becomes poorer. With poor air quality comes various respiratory problems and stale air. When stale air increases it reacts with the higher humidity levels and the decaying food and animals in the house causing mold starts to grow. The growth of mold can cause serious structural damage and health problems. A homeowner with a hoarding disorder often leaves food uneaten and lying around causing it to decaying resulting in pet infestations. There can be nests of insects and pests in houses that a homeowner may not even know about. These pests can lead to major structural damages, a house fire, or transfer disease.
Fire hazards are a big problem when it comes to hoarding. The excess amount of objects are more likely to cause a fire do to the abundant amount of flammable objects so close to incandescent bulbs and stoves. The high potential of pest infestations also increases the risk of a house fire because of their ability to chew through wiring and cause electrical failures. Another common hazard found in a hoarders house is faulty appliances which can easily cause fires. If a fire does spark up in a house full of clutter it is not only hard to escape through all the stuff that blocks the windows and doors, but it is also hard for rescuers to save the residents that are stuck in the flames. With so many flammable objects fire can spread quickly and smoke develops quicker making it even harder for residents to live.
Structural Damage is common is houses that face hoarding. Homeowners have limited access to different systems in their house so they do not receive necessary maintenance on systems ranging from sprinkler systems to plumbing. If there is a pest infestation the rodents can make holes in the walls and ductworks while ruining wiring, insulation and the base structures of the home. The mold from the stale air and water damage damages the structural materials and can compromise the integrity of the home. The most apparent structural damage that can occur is due to the abundant clutter distributed through the house that can lead to a collapse of floors and walls leading to an unlivable house or can even injure the residents of the home.
Living in a home that is filled with the clutter of an individual with a hoarding disorder is not safe for the residents or the home. If you do have a hoarding problem and want it cleaned call SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County and we will restore and clean your property. It will be "Like it never even happened." 330-497-4600
Disaster Preparedness - Are You Ready for a Power Loss?
2/26/2019 (Permalink)
Be prepared for a Power Outage in Stark County.
Power outages are common and detrimental to many families. From the years 2008 to 2013 an average of 847,785 people were affected annually by electric outages. These individuals faced an average of 9,968 minutes, 166.1 hours, a year in a power outage. Power outages can be the cause of animals, vehicle accidents, equipment failure, and spikes in electrical supply. Although the leading cause of outages is weather. Weather accounts for 80 percent of power outages. This is why it is necessary to be prepared for a power outage when storms build up.
Disrupted communications, and transport, closed businesses including grocery stores, food spoilage, and contamination, along with flooding can all be associated with the loss of power. To protect yourself from facing these situations prepare for the worst so you can survive during the outage and be safe after.
To prepare for an outage take inventory of items that rely on electricity including your telephone. Account for medicine and medical devices that rely on refrigeration or electricity. Have batteries and flashlights that will assist you when in the dark. Have enough nonperishable food to last you the length of the outage. Install carbon monoxide and fire alarms with battery backups to ensure safety during the outage. Finally, Be aware of what is happening in your area by following weather reports.
If an outage occurs don’t panic. Keep your refrigerators and freezers closed in order to keep food fresh. Do not use a gas stove. Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid electrical surges. Be aware if you have medicines that are dependent on electricity or refrigeration and take care of them. Once you are safe contact neighbors and people close to you to see if they are safe.
After the power comes on to ensure future safety throw out all food if it was subjected to temperatures below 40 degrees and any medications that could have been spoiled. Also replace any materials you used to be safe for the next outage.
It is important to be prepared and know the risks of a power outage in case you find yourself in the situation. Have an emergency plan and be prepared so you can stay safe while having no power.
