A Hydroxyl Generator Can Help Remove Fire Odor from you Massillion, Ohio Home

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

Hydroxyl Generator SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County has advanced equipment to help remove smoke odor from your Massillion, Ohio home after a fire disaster.

A fire can produce an extreme odor that can linger in your Massillion, Ohio home. When our SERVPRO crews arrive to begin the fire, damage clean up and restoration process a Hydroxyl Generator is placed in the home. Our crews will remove all the non-salvageable items and clean the ceilings, walls, windows, doors, and floors. The salvageable contents will either be packed up and cleaned at the SERVPRO warehouse or cleaned on site depending on the severity of the fire.

What is a Hydroxyl Generator?

This state-of-the-art system sends UV rays (365nm) (emitted from a TiO2 photo-catalytic lamp) through an anatase-coated glass sleeve to trap vast amounts of titanium dioxide. Next, electron hole pairs form and react with water and oxygen, producing free electrons and hydroxyl radicals that, when dispersed by a fan, convert organic and inorganic gases and air pollutants into carbon dioxide and water. Translation: Stinky air is neutralized, and people do not have to leave their home.

  • Place towels on the floors - One of the ways that damage can spread to other parts of the house is underfoot. By placing clean towels and sheets around the damaged area, you can create walkways that stop ash from getting tracked around the house.

  • Change your HVAC filters – Chances are, much of the smoke and ash got sucked into your HVAC system. While SERVPRO technicians are trained and certified to clean these systems out, you should still do all you can to avoid spreading residues around the house. A quick filter swap could stop ash from spreading to new parts of your home.
  • Stay safe – Fires may affect the structural components of your home. If you notice burned supports, falling ceiling material, loose wiring, or any other potential hazards, stay away from the area. Our experienced personnel can identify and contain these threats without any risk to you.

Factors that Determine A Fire Damage Estimate

8/14/2020 (Permalink)

Roof Soot If you experience a fire damage, call SERVPRO of Northwest Stark County to help cleanup and restore your Massillion, Ohio.

Five factors that contribute to a fire remediation estimate

1. Board-up & Roof Tarp Services

Mitigation is one of the earliest expenses to a fire restoration effort. A restoration company from Massillion, Ohio will come out immediately to your home or business and help you determine the scope of loss. Plywood is used to cover most vertical holes in your structure, and tarps are used to cover large holes in your roof. Depending on the extent of the damage and if water is used by the fire department, mitigation work may be required.

2. Security & Fencing

Another aspect of the mitigation process is the protection of your property from intruders and animals. Commercial property owners feel better if the fence is at least put around the facility.

3. Waste & Damage Removal

The next expense to consider in the estimate is the removal of damaged materials. SERVPRO crews will get to work pulling out water damage carpeting, smoke damage walls and insulation. Beyond the removal, and extensive cleaning will start after the debris is removed.

4. Reconstruction

Rebuilding your property is the final expense. The company you hire will inspect and assess the structure and integrity of the building. Everything will be reinforced, and the crew will replace all damaged areas of the building. When complete, your property will look as it did before the fire.

5. Insurance

Your insurance policy will inevitably help to reduce the expense of the fire restoration, but there are too many variables to consider specifying how much the insurance will cover. The best thing is to contact your insurance agent.

Step Five: Reconstruction Process

Step 5: The Reconstruction Process is the final blog to our 5 Steps of the Fire Damage Restoration Process. After a fire has damaged your belongings and/or structure it is important to restore your home or business properly and quickly to get back to living and working.

The final stage is to begin restoring the salvageable items that were damaged by soot and smoke.  If the items are damaged beyond repair, then items will be replaced. During this process a project coordinator will work with the home or business owner to remodel and redesign the structure. All new drywall, doors, cabinets, flooring, windows or any other part of the structure that was damaged will be ordered and replaced. For instance, if the carpet can’t be cleaned then new carpet will be picked out, ordered and then installed during this final phase.

After all renovations have been completed and the home is back to preloss condition then any contents that were packed up will be delivered back to the home or building.

Step Four: Clean Up & Restoration Services

Step 4: Clean up and Restoration Services is the next blog to our 5 Steps of the Fire Damage Restoration Process. After a fire has damaged your belongings and/or structure it is important to restore your home or business properly and quickly to get back to living and working.

During this step, the fire damage restoration service will begin the clean-up of the fire damage. SERVPRO uses the following cleaning techniques to remove soot and smoke residue from your surfaces:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

If the fire department used water to put out the flames this is also when water damage cleanup and restoration begins. All standing water will be extracted, and air movers and dehumidifiers will then be placed to dry out the structure. After the structure has been monitored for several days and all areas are completely dry then all equipment will be removed, and the areas affected by water will be sanitized. Also, during this stage an air scrubber will be placed to remove any lingering smoke odors.

If the items or structure in these areas have been severely damaged and can’t be restored, then these items will be removed and disposed. All unsalvageable items will be documented by the restoration crews to ensure that the homeowner will be reimbursed.

If the fire damage is severe enough and your home or business requires extensive restoration or cleaning due to fire damage a pack out of contents will be conducted. A move-out will provide several benefits, including:

  • A quicker remodeling process
  • Protecting items from potential damage
  • Protecting contents from further on-site damage

The contents are moved to an offsite facility, where it will be inspected for damage. A detailed list will be provided to insurance adjusters and items will be cleaned and restored to preloss condition, and then stored until your home or business is ready to move back all items.

The longer you leave water in your home the more the extent of the damage is going to increase. Tips for Protecting Your Business Against Fire Devastation

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

Having an evacuation plan is important in your Ohio commercial building incase of an emergency

When you own your own business, you can't afford to be unprepared for extreme circumstances. If your commercial building in Jackson Township, Stark County, OH, caught fire, for example, it would be helpful to have a plan for dealing with the aftermath. Here are some fire preparation tips that can help you handle emergencies as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Data Backup

Every important electronic document should be regularly backed up, and at least one backup copy should be stored in an off-site location. There is a collection of essential information you need to keep your business running smoothly, including:

• Payroll records
• Customer contact and billing information
• Supplier contact information
• List of inventory, equipment and essential assets
• List of the cost of replacing essential equipment and supplies

It is also advisable to store the numbers of fire mitigation experts and your insurance company with the copies of your important business documents. Then you don't have to scrounge to find the first numbers you need to call.

Insurance Coverage

Proper fire preparation involves knowing that your business is covered if something should happen. Review your insurance portfolio with your agent to make sure that you have covered all your bases beyond the standard general liability and property policies.

Disaster Plan

Every business should have a detailed disaster preparation plan. The plan should include evacuation procedures, task delegation, relocation decisions and a business continuity outline. All employees should receive training on the plan as well as the opportunity to complete a test run to identify unforeseen flaws. Don't wait until the fire damage has already occurred to decide how you are going to proceed.

It's never too early to protect your business against potential fire devastation. Make sure you have protected important information, made an emergency plan and purchased sufficient insurance coverage. Sufficient fire preparation could mean the difference between your company’s survival after a fire and its demise.

Smoke Can Damage Electronics

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

After a fire of any size in your home in Jackson Township, OH destruction caused by smoke can occur in places that might not be the first to come to mind, such as inside electronics. Today, most homes are filled with technological gadgets that would be challenging to live without. If you discover after the fire cleanup that any electronics have been compromised, you may need the services of a professional to return them to their previous condition.

Electronics That Can Be Affected by Smoke

Smoke contains acids that can create corrosion on metal surfaces, and corrosion can lead to failure of the device. Whether the electronic device is for work, play or for health and safety, it is important to have it assessed for damage as part of the fire cleanup process. Examples of electronics that are subject to corrosion from smoke damage include the following:

• computers, modems, routers and printers
• tablets and portable music players
• virtual assistants
• fax machines and other office equipment
• televisions, DVR machines and DVD players
• stereo components, including radios, CD players and speakers
• kitchen appliances
• alarm systems
• video and audio equipment, including cameras
• cell phones
• game controllers
• cable boxes
• thermostats, heating and cooling equipment
• humidifiers and dehumidifiers
• medical devices

To be safe, it is best to assume that any electronics that have been present in a house fire have been exposed to smoke. Electronics exposed to significant levels of smoke can overheat immediately, in which case the damage may be obvious. Corrosion, however, will not be immediately apparent. That is why it is important, before powering up the electronic device, to have it checked by a professional technician.

Much of life in the twenty-first century involves technology, and electronics are a staple in the vast majority of American homes. In the unfortunate event of fire cleanup, assessing the condition of electronics is a must. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthweststarkcounty.com for more information on fire damage,

Proper Sprinkler Maintenance Can Help Quench a Fire

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

Give SERVPRO a call after commercial fire damage.

If your commercial building has a fire sprinkler system in place, you expect this safety device to work if a fire breaks out in Jackson Township, OH. However, neglected sprinklers may not be able to work when they're needed. Consider these tips to ensure your building is as protected as can be.

• Have an inspection. Firefighters and commercial fire mitigation teams may do regular inspections on a fire sprinkler system to ensure everything is in working order. This inspection could look for damages to sprinkler heads, positions of valves and other important factors.
• Meet safety standards. The National Fire Protection Agency has set safety standards for this fire suppression tool. You should learn about the standards and make sure your system is up to code. If it isn't, you may not have the water power needed to put out a fire in a building of your size.
• Do regular maintenance. Doing a regular fire sprinkler cleanup can help ensure the system will work when you need it to. Dust and grime can build up on the sprinkler, which may block outgoing water. You can have the system cleaned and repaired to make sure it is at its best.
• Communicate with employees. Do you expect valves to remain open? Do you want sprinkler heads to be left untouched? No matter how you want the sprinkler system treated, you need to be sure to communicate this with your employees or tenants. Put up signs to make your wishes clear.
• Keep detailed records. You should keep records of everything done to your sprinklers. Whether there was an inspection, repair or fire sprinkler cleanup, you should document it. This can help you prove you're keeping your system up to code, but it can also help you remember when you need another cleaning.

Having a fire sprinkler system in a commercial building can help reduce the damage done by a fire. If you want this system to work properly, you need to make sure it is maintained. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthweststarkcounty.com for more information on commercial fire damage.

Trash or Keep? Assessing Your Possessions After a Fire

5/10/2018 (Permalink)

Give SERVPRO a call if you experience residential fire damage.

Your instinct after a fire may be to preserve as many of your possessions as possible, but be careful: dangers may remain even after the flames have been extinguished and the structure has been deemed habitable. Although many of your possessions may be salvageable, there are a few that it’s best to throw away and replace.

Food
Because most residential fires start in the kitchen, food is often exposed to flames, smoke, high heat and water damage – all of which can make food unsafe to eat. If the food is visibly charred, discard it. Any food items that were stored in the open - for example, in a fruit basket – must be thrown away. Also throw away food that was stored in unsealed boxes or bags, as it may have been exposed to smoke or fire-retardant chemicals.

If your refrigerator and freezer remained closed during the fire, the food inside may be salvageable. Check to see if it is still cold, and make sure that the power was not cut off for more than four hours.

Clothing and Textiles
Many clothes and textiles can be cleaned and restored after a fire, but discard any items with visible fire damage. Also be sure to clean clothes thoroughly before wearing them. Residual chemicals in smoke-exposed clothing can be harmful to the lungs.

Medicines and Cosmetics
Be extremely cautious about taking medications that may have been exposed to smoke and chemicals. Don’t take chances. If your medications were in unsealed containers, if they smell of smoke or if they appear sooty, replace them. Cosmetics, too, can become harmful if exposed to smoke. Inspect them carefully before use, and throw away anything that wasn’t sealed during the fire.

Recovering from a fire in Jackson Township, Ohio can difficult in many respects, but guarding your own health and well-being is paramount. As hard as it may be to throw away food, clothing and other household goods, do not put your health in jeopardy. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthweststarkcounty.com for more information on fire damage

4 Tips for Preparing Pets for a Fire Emergency

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

You should have a fire emergency plan set up for your family. This plan should contain many components, including pet preparation. Things will get hectic if a fire ever breaks out, and you do not want your furry friend to be left behind. Pet safety is critical during emergencies, and here are some points to keep in mind.

1. Have Pet Supplies in Your Disaster Kit

Your disaster kit should contain supplies to help you and your family while you wait for your house to be habitable once again. It should contain food, medications and water. It also needs to contain supplies for your pet. Have enough pet food to last for five days, medications if your pet is on anything and records of ownership and vaccinations.

2. Get Your Pet Microchipped

During a fire emergency, your pet may panic and flee. This can be extremely disheartening. In addition to dealing with fire remediation, you now have to locate your animal, too. However, if you get your pet microchipped well in advance, then finding it will become much easier.

3. Find Pet-Friendly Accommodations

While your house is being repaired, you may need to stay at a hotel in Jackson Township, OH. Look at hotels in your city to see which ones allow pets. It will save you a lot of hassle if the time ever comes. You can also ask friends or neighbors if you can stay with them during this time and if they would be all right with having a dog or cat around for a week.

4. Keep a Pet-Alert Sign in Your Window

You want firefighters to be able to locate your pet in the event of a fire emergency. If you need to evacuate, then you may not be readily accessible to tell the firefighters this information. Keep a sign in your window to inform firefighters there is a pet in this house. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthweststarkcounty.com for more information on fire damage.

3 Things To Do After a Home Fire

12/13/2017 (Permalink)

3 Things To Do After a Home Fire

A home fire can be an emotionally and financially devastating event. There are many things to accomplish after disaster strikes. If you're unsure where to begin, consider these three crucial fire restoration tasks. Completing these steps can get you started on recovering your livelihood and peace of mind.

1. Call Your Insurance Company

If you have homeowners insurance, your plan might cover some of the costs involved in getting your home back to livable condition. Fire insurance on top of a general policy can be even more beneficial. Before attempting any repairs, call your insurance company to let your agent know about the fire and inquire about potential financial assistance.

2. Consult With the Experts

Enter your home alone and you might encounter heavy fumes and unsanitary debris. Recruiting professional fire restoration experts in Jackson Township, Ohio is a great way to stay safe and ensure the repair of your home is in good hands. Professionals can work on homes after all types of fires, accurately assess the damage and utilize advanced methods to get your residence back to pre-fire condition.

3. Board Up Windows

During the smoke cleaning process, you probably won't be staying at your residence. This leaves it vulnerable to threats, especially theft. Troublemakers might see a fire as an opportunity to loot your property, and they might look for ways to enter other than your front door. Boarding up your windows is a quick and effective way to keep them out.

Professionals can use plywood and clamps to cover your windows. Intruders won't be able to unscrew the material to enter your home. If you're still worried after getting your windows boarded, you might also consider temporarily removing all valuables from your home.

Following these three tips can eliminate some of the stress resulting from a home fire. Proper fire restoration can get you on the road to living comfortably again in Jackson Township, Ohio in a short amount of time. The Effects of Fire Damage

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

The Effects of Fire Damage

You may have been advised to enlist the services of a professional fire damage restoration company to carry out a fire cleanup exercise after a fire damage. The advice is sound. Several fire victims do not pay attention to the after-effects of a commercial fire damage, a fire in business or incidents of a fire in home. You may end up incurring more losses after a fire damage through smoke damage and soot damage. Property that could be salvaged may be lost if you take it upon yourself to restore your home or business to its previous state. Here are reasons why you should opt to hire the services of a restoration company.

Peace of Mind

The events of a commercial fire damage, a fire in business or that of a fire in home are catastrophic. If you are a victim of such misfortune, you will need ample time to recover. By taking care of restoring your premises to its previous state, the fire damage restoration team shields you from the burden of the restoration task. Your input will be limited to offering suggestions and paying for the cost.

Saves you Money

Restoring your premises after a fire damage incident costs less when experts in the field are involved. Due to their years of experience in dealing with fire damage, soot damage, and smoke damage, they are familiar with the right and less costly fire cleanup and restoration plans. Other than that, the restoration company has access to the necessary equipment required for a fire cleanup. These tools help clean surfaces affected by the smoke damage and the soot damage.

The machines come in handy when cleaning the air of any smoke smell. These apparatus are expensive to acquire and hire especially for those who are not in the fire damage restoration business.

Security Guarantee for your Premises

Professional fire damage restoration entities should operate in a safe and secure environment. As such, the team ensures that there is a board up of the site as a safeguard against looters. The crew also makes certain that there is a board up of the hanging walls and ceilings. After the fire suppression efforts are undertaken, there is the risk of a water damage scenario. Board up of the hallways and passages of the building is, therefore, done. Board up guarantees the safety of the property and the people working on the site.

Restoration of Valuables as Opposed to Discarding

When assessing the damage on belongings, it is easy to discard the ones affected. However, some of the items may have sentimental value. In such situations, discarding may
be too rush a decision to take. You will realize that such possessions fall into the
category of those that can be professionally cleaned and restored. Professional cleaning leaves no trace of any smoke smell, soot damage or smoke damage. Therefore, there is no need to lose valued possessions without cause.

Repairs and Renovations Done at no Extra Cost

Before the restoration company undertakes the project, there is an assessment done. The
report details the extent of the smoke damage, the soot damage, and the fire damage.
Information from this damage assessment informs the repairs to be done. Any adjustments or renovations can be made on the building as long as the cost implication does not exceed the amount quoted in the contract. Such an arrangement may come in handy in commercial fire damage situations and fire in business cases. The building may be renovated to allow easier access in emergency situations.

If you fall victim to a fire in home incident, you could take advantage of this opportunity to make some changes to your house.

Follow up Consultations

Fire damage restoration services do not end with fire cleanup exercises and home or business restoration. Restoration companies go as far as ensuring sure safeguards are in place to best deal with fire emergencies. The team also offers advice on how to manage smoke smell, soot damage and smoke damage in fire-related situations.

If you notice a smoke smell, or you are in a commercial fire damage situation, a fire in home or a fire in business scenario, do not attempt any rescue mission. Call for emergency and restoration services from a professional fire restoration company.

Responding Effectively to Commercial Fire Damage

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

Responding Effectively to Commercial Fire Damage

Has your business sustained fire damage recently? Every week, around the United States managers face the challenge of responding effectively to commercial fire damage. While most companies drill their employees in fire suppression technologies and instruct them rigorously in the appropriate steps to take following the outbreak of a conflagration, some firms still wholly fail to prepare management to deal with the challenging aftermath of these events.

The Departing Fire Truck Dilemma

Fortunately, the vast majority of fires in businesses remain small in scope. A company's modern fire sprinkler system may rapidly help extinguish a utility room fire in a busy retail establishment, or a blaze resulting from an electrical fire or grease fire in a kitchen. When alarm systems activate and summon local fire crews to the scene, small business owners may feel grateful indeed they spent time teaching employees how to evacuate everyone from the premises safely.

Money spent installing a fire sprinkler system and fire suppression technologies offers a return on investment many times over. Commercial fire damage today frequently remains limited in extent thanks to the development of excellent fire suppression systems. Yet after emergency responders gather up the last remaining fire hose and the final firefighter departs, what steps should employees take next? How should managers respond once the fire truck leaves?

A Pervasive Problem

A small blaze which produces limited, highly contained, fire damage in a business may exact a heavy cleanup toll. Fire sprinkler system activation frequently causes extensive water damage, for instance. Even if a firefighter using a fire hose did not deposit gallons of water inside the interior of the building, fire suppression tools may have produced a minor flooding situation. Water spraying unexpectedly and indiscriminately over carpeting, upholstery and other furnishings creates a mess. While valuable in saving lives, the fire sprinkler system may unleash a deluge.

Additionally, smoke damage and soot damage also pose persistent, challenging cleanup dilemmas for businesses during the aftermath of a conflagration. You don't want these problems to keep reminding your customers and employees that your enterprise suffered a fire. Yet eradicating the lingering signs of a blaze sometimes proves difficult. In the absence of proper cleanup and fire restoration measures, smoke damage and soot damage may remain apparent weeks, months (or even years) later. Eliminating traces of a utility room fire or an electrical fire usually falls well outside the expertise of company personnel. Visitors won't welcome the acrid smell of smoke damage, or expect ugly soot damage still marring the premises.

Professional Fire Restoration: A Timely Solution

Fortunately, today full-time fire restoration experts assist businesses in permanently removing pervasive signs of commercial fire damage. After the last firefighter leaves with his heavy extinguisher and fire hose in tow, and your local fire truck returns to the station, you'll want to instruct your management team to contact a reputable fire restoration expert. Taking this step could save your company thousands of dollars in revenues over the long term.

Full-time fire restoration firms possess the specialized equipment and supplies required to thoroughly extract dirty water from the building. They'll carefully clean away the ugly traces of soot damage and smoke damage, too. Removing fire damage correctly allows your enterprise to respond resiliently after a conflagration. By working closely with an experienced fire restoration professional, you'll safeguard your employees from coming into contact with noxious fire damage residues. Restoration personnel have received training in proper cleanup and remediation procedures.
