After a water disaster you may have documents that have been damaged by water, your important papers may not be necessarily lost. With the latest in document restoration technology, even the most water damaged documents can be restored. It is important to act quickly and properly to preserve and restore your documents.
As soon as you realize you have water damaged documents on your hands, SERVPRO of Northwest Stark recommends:
- Open windows and doors and turn on fans to circulate the air in the room that has been damaged by water. Don’t aim the fans directly on the documents.
- Blot away excess moisture on any documents with clean towels or sponges. Avoid blotting handwritten or otherwise sensitive water damaged documents because they can smear. If there is standing water in the room extract the water out of the room.
- Quickly remove the highest-priority documents. A restoration company has a procedure to properly prepare for restoring the documents. There are a set of steps for preparing, labeling and transporting boxes of water damaged documents.
- Don’t dry books on their front edge. Open and fan the book and stand it on its top or bottom edge. Turn the book over to dry on the opposing edge every couple of hours.
- If you have damaged photographs, don’t touch the surfaces handle them on the edges. Most photographs may be air-dried by hanging them using clothespins and a laundry line. Historical photographs should be left to the expertise of restoration specialists.
