Flooding in Northeast Ohio
5/30/2019 (Permalink)
Did you know that floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States?
The National Weather Service in Cleveland, Ohio had issued a severe thunderstorm warning yesterday for the communities in Northeast, Ohio. When a cold front moves across the area it has a potential for severe thunderstorms and flooding.
It is most likely that Stark and Summit counties will see more storms this Spring. It is important to be safe when storms can occur especially when producing 60-70 mph winds and torrential rain that can produce flooding. When flooding occurs failing to evacuate the flooded areas can result in injury or even death. Floods can develop slowly or with no warning producing a flash flood. Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can cause power outages, damage homes and buildings, create landslides and disrupt traffic.
If the National Weather Services announces a flood warning it is important to:
- Find shelter right away
- Do not walk, drive or swim in a flood
- Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water
- Evacuate if told to do so
- Move to a higher floor in your house
