The weather is getting warmer outside and homeowners are beginning their Spring cleanup with washing the outside of the house, cars and watering a new planted garden. Before, we turn on the outside spigot it is very important to make sure that your outside faucet is in working order before a possible water damage to the interior of your home.
During the cold winter months outside faucets that still have hoses attached may freeze. Outside faucets are designed to be “frost proof”, but it only works by shutting the water off inside your home and letting the water to completely drain out of the faucet so there is no water left to freeze. If the water is left in the hose it has the possibility of freezing and bursting the pipe.
Unfortunately, you won't know the pipe had frozen and burst until you go to turn on the faucet for the first time. If the pipe did break and you turn on your spigot and water sprays all over the exterior of your house, then most likely it is flowing into your interior walls. To make sure that your pipes didn’t break you can perform a quick and easy test by turning your faucets on for a minute and then turning them off. If you see water coming out of places it shouldn’t be then your probably have a busted pipe in the wall that will need to be fixed.
